John
E. Sowin, M.D.
Expert
Evaluations for Exceptional Outcomes
In addition to performing diagnostic radiology, Dr. John Sowin uses his expertise in nuclear medicine to gather patient information that may otherwise be unavailable, require surgery or necessitate more expensive diagnostic tests. With a fellowship in nuclear medicine and academic training in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging, physicians and specialists rely on Dr. Sowin to use nuclear medicine in the diagnosis, management and treatment of serious disease.
Nuclear medicine imaging is unique in that it documents organ function and structure. Dr. Sowin performs procedures that often identify abnormalities very early in the progression of a disease long before some medical problems become apparent with other diagnostic tests.
His special
interests in nuclear medicine include:
• PET imaging
• Oncologic nuclear medicine imaging, including
Prostascint, CEA and Oncoscint scans
• Radioactive iodine treatment of benign thyroid disease
Dr. Sowin is one of the few doctors in the region who have received academic training in PET imaging before the technology became readily accessible to community hospitals. PET is often more sensitive than conventional diagnostic imaging, distinguishing tumors as cancerous or noncancerous and detecting cancer that has spread to other areas of the body. PET scans are used most often to detect cancer and to determine the effectiveness of therapy by characterizing biochemical changes in the cancer.
Although guidelines are continually expanding for this new technology, Dr. Sowin currently uses PET to stage various types of cancer including lymphomas, breast cancer, lung nodules, colon cancer and others. Along with Dr. Knudson and Dr. Iglar, the three perform and read more PET scans than any other radiological group in the area. Dr Sowin serves as Section Chief of the Nuclear Medicine Division of RAA.
Dr. Sowin joined Radiology Associates of Appleton in 1998. He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago. He completed his internship at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and his diagnostic radiology residency at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He also completed a fellowship in nuclear medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals.
He is board certified in diagnostic radiology by the American College of Radiology and the American Board of Nuclear Medicine. He also is a member of the Radiological Society of North America, the American Roentgen Ray Society and the Society of Nuclear Medicine.
